Every year I eagerly wait at the letter box for my one and only SNAIL MAIL Birthday Card delivery. I get excited for two reasons:
1. Who gets hand delivered mail these days?
2. It will be from my beloved Nan & Pop who live in Forster.
This year was DIFFERENT.... much to my disappointment... NO such letter arrived. I kept running outside like a little kid, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Postie with my special delivery.
The day of my birthday arrived - still NO card/letter - Nan & Pop rang me with their lovely rendition of Happy Birthday.
1. OK, so THEY didn't have a memory lapse and FORGET it was my birthday.
2. Cards just too expensive to send these days.
3. Do I mention it? Will they?
4. What if the neighbours have it & wont hand it over?
5. Waaaaahhh ....
Turns out..... they DID send me a card!!! I didn't know whether to tell them I got it anyway, or to tell the truth about my missing, long awaited delivery. I'm not a good liar, and in fear of them asking me a curly question about what pop wrote this year... I gave in and told them the truth.
NOW WE WERE ALL DISAPPOINTED!
True to form my darling grandparents sent me a NEW card (with even more scratch lottery tickets than ever before) and I was happy .... and they were happy. I didn't win anything mind you.
FAST FORWARD THREE MONTHS LATER.....
One afternoon I decided to look in our letter box, I don't know what made me do it.... Sitting all alone was an envelope with the instantly recognisable scrawl on the front:
" To MONKEY FACE "
"THE" MISSING card.... as I tore it open with delight at being reunited with something lost.... I read their words with a tear in my eye. THIS BIRTHDAY CARD was mine, the words written were heartfelt and joyous and filled with memories of an adventurous childhood spent with my grandparents.
I immediately phoned my Nan & Pop...
I WAS HAPPY and THEY WERE HAPPY...
